[16] p.: color illustrations, black-and-white photographs; 25 x 29 cm. Red stiffened paper wrapper with color illustration. Wrapper is included in page count. Example of racist "humor" popular at the turn of the last century. Poem about the life of a young black boy told affectionately but filled with racist stereotypes (watermelon eating, chicken stealing). Illustrated with color illustrations and black-and-white photographs of black children posing with watermelon, etc. The border of each page also has line drawings of black children playing. The name Rastus was particularly popular in the late 19th and early 20th century as a perjorative generic name for a black man. In Good- Condition: wrapper is soiled and stained, especially upper right-hand corner of front wrapper; creasing and chipping along wrapper edges; small piece of paper lacking from top edge of front wrapper; 3-cm. tear from lower edge of back wrapper with slight loss of paper; wrapper and pages partially separated along spine; lightly soiled throughout, primarily in fore-edge margins. A scarce African-American item.
