The Nine Old Men by Drew Pearson and Robert S. Allen

Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Co., 1937. Hardcover. [10], 325 p.; 21 cm. Red cloth with gilt-stamped spine title and blind-stamped illustration of the Supreme Court on the front cover. No dust jacket. The authors of this examination of the Supreme Court of the 1930s were Washington, D.C., journalists who wrote a column called Washington Merry-Go-Round. The Nine Old Men was criticized for being "vulgar in language, vulgar in tone and innuendo, and guilty of enough inaccuracies to be unreliable in general" (The Yale Law Journal) and praised for its attack on the more conservative members of the Court for basing their decisions on personal beliefs rather than on the law. In Very Good Condition: spine is slightly faded; faint stain on front cover; a former owner wrote the name in pencil of each Supreme Court justice next to the chapter devoted to that man and left a few pencilled marginal marks; otherwise, clean and tight. Very Good. Item #007063
