Life of the Hon. Jeremiah Smith, LL. D.: Member of Congress during Washington's Administration, Judge of the United States Circuit Court, Chief Justice of New Hampshire, etc.

Boston: Charles C. Little and James Brown, 1845. First Edition. Hardcover. First Edition. viii, 516 p.: frontispiece; 21 cm. Contemporary dark brown cloth with gilt-stamped spine title: Life of Smith. Blind-stamped decoration on spine; blind-ruled borders on both boards. Added engraved title page. Frontispiece portrat of Smith engraved by D. Kimberly from a painting by F. Alexander. Small oval embossed stamp in upper corner of front free endpaper for B. Bradley, binder, Boston. The former owner's name appears faintly on the front free endpaper: C. Gayton Pickman. Front fixed endpaper bears the bookplate of Harvard University once used to denote gifts. It acknowledges that this volume was given to the library as the bequest of Clarke Gayton Pickman, of Boston (class of 1811), and received on 13 July 1860 (Pickman had died on May 12, 1860). There is a faint round blue library stamp in the lower portion of the bookplate. The bookplate has been crossed out once in black to indicate withdrawal, presumably. A small label in the upper corner of the front fixed endpaper probably once held the call number. In Good Condition: cover is stained; corners are rubbed; ends of spine frayed with slight loss of cloth at head of spine; old dampstain along fore-edge of front free endpaper, blank leaf following, and faintly at lower corner of frontispiece, not touching image or caption; old dampstain along top edge of last 13 leaves, just touching running title; very occasional foxing; otherwise pages are clean and bright. Good. Item #001283
