The author, Juan Antonio Llorente (1756-1823), was the general secretary of the Inquisition at Madrid in 1789; after becoming a Bonapartist he published this history critical of the Inquisition. It first appeared as Histoire Critique de l'Inquisiton Espagnole in 1817.
