Second Edition. xx, 583, [1] p.; 22 cm. Contemporary half calf with marbled paper over boards. All page edges speckled. Gilt rules on spine. Half title: Llorente's History of the Inquisition. Bookplate of the library of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, Philadelphia, on front fixed endpaper and remains of call number in white on spine; no other remnants of library ownership. The author, Juan Antonio Llorente (1756-1823), was the general secretary of the Inquisition at Madrid in 1789; after becoming a Bonapartist he published this history critical of the Inquisition. It first appeared as Histoire Critique de l'Inquisiton Espagnole in 1817.
