The author had published in 1870 a translation, with a commentary, of the works of the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, founder of Taoism. His continued interest in China is shown in the largest of the works in this volume, "Fu-su: eine Chinesische Geschichte." He was the grandfather of the German poet Lulu von Strauss und Torney.
