Entirely in Latvian. Gift inscription on verso of title page, dated 1961. Rainis was the pseudonym of the author Janis Plieksans (1865-1929), a Latvian poet, playwright, and politician. When Latvia achieved independence in 1918, he returned from exile in Switzerland as a hero of Latvian culture. One of his poems (first line: "Viens pats tris gadus aru, aru, aru, aru") is here illustrated for children by Albert Kronenberg (1887-1958). Scarce.
