Contemporary tree calf with gilt-tooled spine title "Dick's Works" and spine decoration. All page edges marbled green. Front free endpaper and back fixed endpaper inscribed: "Israel S. Adams Book Bought March 19th 1851." Front fixed endpaper bears inscription indicating that Adams' widow and sons, Israel G. Adams and John B. Adams, gave the book to their neighbor Jesse A. Casto in 1891, following the death of Israel S. Adams of Bakersville, N.J. With: a clipping with Adams' obituary. Adams was appointed Collector of Customs at the port of Great Egg Harbor, N.J., on April 14, 1861, one of President Abraham Lincoln's first appointments. Adams held the office for 23 years, in addition to serving as stockholder and director of many improvement and transportation companies in New Jersey.
