Contemporary full speckled calf with six spine compartments between double gilt rules; black leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title "Fownes' Chemistry for Students." Former owners' names, W.H. Thome and C.V. Thome, and initials inscribed on front free endpaper. In 1858 W.H. Thome used red and blue pencils to adorn various pages throughout the book, including the title page; the blank page following the preface to the American edition, on which he drew an American flag (sans stars); and the blank page following the table of contents, on which he drew an American military officer. In 1866 C.V. Thome made a few pencilled notations, primarily on endpapers. In Very Good Condition: leather is rubbed with several small scrapes; 7-cm. tear from upper edge of front free endpaper, without loss; a few page corners creased; foxing throughout, generally light; pencilled embellishments, as noted above.
