New York: Edward Dunigan & Brother, 1853. Paperback. [20] p.: illustrations; 15 cm. Wrapper with front wrapper illustration and alphabet on back wrapper. Title page reproduces front wrapper with illustration of child sitting on cushion and holding dog that is biting the child's ABC book. Mrs. Lovechild was on of the pseudonyms used by Ellenor Fenn (1744-1813). No date of publication. The publisher used the address on the title page, 151 Fulton St., from 1848 through 1856. Edward Dunigan died in 1853, but his half-brother, James Kirker, continued to published under Edward Dunigan & Brother at the 151 Fulton St. until he moved to 371 Broadway in 1857. Page count includes wrappers. Gift inscription on front wrapper verso and title page dated Dec. 27, 1853. It was given to Henry C. Davis, of Lincoln, Vt., by his father, who admonished him: "do keep it neat and clean and not fool it away." At some point, a wallpaper wrapper was added to protect it. Contains several alphabets, including one with two lines of verse and an illustration for each letter, including: "V was a VAT, Of prime Albany ale." The letter X is allowed four lines: "X is hard to depict, But your temper dont vex For no word truly English, Begins with an X." In Good Condition: chipping to edges throughout; wrappers are soiled; foxing throughout; a solid copy of this scarce children's book. Good. Item #003217
