The First American, from the Fourth London Edition, corrected, in three volumes. 3 volumes: xxxi, [1], 426, [4], 427, [1], [8], 435, [13] p.: engraved title vignettes, tail pieces, and in-text illustrations; 21 cm. Contemporary black half calf with black bead-grain cloth over boards. Gilt-tooled spine titles and volume numbers; five spine compartments between raised bands. Marbled endpapers. Small bookplate on front fixed endpaper of each volume of Daniel Kaine (1811-1886), member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and president of the Uniontown and West Virginia Railroad Company, whose library was sold at auction in Nov. 1909 by the Merwin-Clayton Sales Co. Includes list of subscribers on final unpaginated pages of vol. 3. Without frontispiece portrait found in some copies. In Very Good Condition: leather is rubbed, with several small scrapes; paper is browning with light foxing throughout; otherwise clean and tight. Very Good. Item #003235
