A Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents 1789-1897 vol. 8 [James A. Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, Grover Cleveland]
Washington DC: Government Printing Office, 1898. Hardcover. xiv, vi, [2], 852 p.: frontispiece and 3 additional leaves of plates; 23 cm. Full calf with five spine compartments between raised bands; gilt-tooled red, dark green, and black morocco labels in the middle three compartments. Blind-rolled borders on both boards and spine. This is vol. 37 of The Miscellaneous Documents of the House of Representatives for the Second Session of the Fifty-Third Congress, 1893-'94. The frontispiece and portraits are tissue guarded. The frontispiece is an engraving of the Library of Congress. The portraits are of Presidents James A. Garfield, Chester A. Arthur, and Grover Cleveland, whose papers are presented in this volume. This volume covers the Garfield-Arthur term of four years and the first term of Cleveland, the only American president to serve two non-consecutive terms. Each section contains a biographical sketch of the subject and his inaugural address, and, as appropriate, annual messages, special messages, proclamations, and executive orders. Uncommon to find this collection of presidential papers in an attractive legal-style leather binding, rather than publisher's cloth binding. In Very Good Condition: edges are rubbed; a few scrapes on the back board; hinges are solid; pages and plates are clean and tight. Very Good. Item #003327
