Handwritten Receipt for the purchase of Ale and Stout from Anthony Slater by John Hamilton, Philadelphia 1811
Philadelphia: 1811. 1 sheet (10.5 x 17 cm.). Dated June, 1811, Philadelphia. John Hamilton bought one cask of old Burton Ale and one cask of brown stout from Anthony Slater for $50. Anthony Slater (b. 1779) was an importer and wholesaler with a store located on E. & J. Perot's wharf in Philadelphia. An English immigrant, his success in his new home is illustrated by his admission to the First City Troop in 1805 and his commissioning of a miniature by Philadelphia artist Raphaelle Peale, son of Charles Willson Peale, in 1814. His wife, Rebecca Allen Slater (1787-1808), is buried at Christ Church. In Very Good- Condition: torn out of a larger; chipping at two corners; minor foxing; clean and legible. Very Good -.
