Signatures: A-4B4 (index signed: [a] b c) (4to). Original full calf with gilt-ruled spine; black leather spine label with gilt-tooled volume number. Includes index on final 6 pages. Bookbinder's label on front fixed endpaper: "Books Bound and Libraries Repaired by William Derickson, No. 11, Carter's Alley, Philadelphia." Very little is known about the bookbinder William Derickson. Verso of first plate in text contains manuscript record of the births of Anne Matilda Acuff (b. 1811), Justus W. Acuff (b. 1813), and Mary Catharine Acuff (b. 1815). This volume of Gifford's history covers the years from 1328 under Philip the 6th to 1483 under Lewis the 11th. This Philadelphia edition is much scarcer than the 1794 London edition. In Good+ Condition: back joint separated from head of spine for 5 cm.; corners bumped and rubbed; old tape residue at head of spine on both boards; lacking last leaf (p. 7 of index, following W/Wild); lacking front free endpaper; old faint dampstaining in first and last pages; fore-edge of 3rd plate lacking, without impact on plate; 3-cm. tear from upper edge of 6th plate, without impact on plate; lower corner of pp. 51-52 lacking, without loss of text; small hole in pp. 565-567 with minimal loss of text; light browning and soiling throughout.
