Original light green paper over boards; plain spine paper labels with printed "Woodstock" and volume number. Pages are uncut. "William Marks, Printer" -- below imprint on vol. 2 title page. Issued the same year as the first American edition. Todd and Bowden (190Rc) state that the first American edition was issued by Carey & Lea in Philadelphia, but this edition was not seen by them. Former owner's name at head of each title page: Jacob R. Elfreth. With, found in one volume: orange business card of James Elfreth, New Carpet Store, Philadelphia. The first owner was probably Jacob R. Elfreth (1789-1870), a Quaker teacher at Westtown School and later bookkeeper for the Lehigh Navigation Company, who had a son James Elfreth (b. 1833). In Very Good- Condition: covers are rubbed and lightly soiled; front joint of vol. 1 cracked; small hole in center of vol. 1 back board; occasional foxing, primarily along margins, heavier on a few pages of vol. 2; otherwise, clean and tight.
