Contemporary full polished calf with six spine compartments between raised bands. Leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title "Horsley's Sermons." Gilt-tooled decoration on spine; double gilt ruled borders on both boards with triple blind-ruled borders within and blind-tooled rosette in each corner. All page edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Samuel Horsley (1733-1806), bishop of St. David's, Rochester, and St. Asaph, was a master of English prose. Samuel Taylor Coleridge called him "the one red leaf, the last of its clan, with relation to the learned teachers of our Church." J.H. Overton described him as writing in a "remarkably pure, luminous, and dignified style" and praised his sermons as "the finest specimens of pulpit eloquence which the age produced."
