Vol. 1 only, of 5 volumes: [16 p.], 2096 columns [1048 p.], copper-engraved frontispiece portrait of Matthew Poole; 39 cm. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten spine title. Title page in red and black. Woodcut initials, headpieces, and tailpiece. Commentary is printed in columns. Former owner's inscription on front free endpaper: Charles Porterfield Krauth, Winchester, Va., 1851. The name and date in a different hand on back fixed endpaper. Charles Porterfield Krauth (1823-1883) was an American Lutheran minister and teacher. In 1851, when he acquired this volume, he was the minister of a church in Winchester, Va. In 1864 he was asked to lead a new Lutheran seminary in Philadelphia, now known as the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. In 1867 he and the Rev. William Passavant founded the General Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, composed of bodies that had withdrawn from the General Synod. He was also Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania from 1868 to 1883. In Very Good Condition: vellum is lightly soiled; corners rubbed; minor loss at head of back joint; faint old dampstain at head of gutter for 3/4 of book and occasionally at lower corners; Preface has underlining and marginal notations in red and blue pencil; otherwise, clean and tight.
