Robert Ridgway (1850–1929), was an American ornithologist appointed in 1880 as the first full-time curator of birds at the United States National Museum. An outstanding descriptive taxonomist, he wrote The Birds of North and Middle America, which was issued in 8 volumes, 1901–1919. Herbert Friedmann used Ridgway's work for the uncompleted ninth volume to produce this volume in 1941.
