Philadelphia: Desilver, Thomas, & Co., 1838. Hardcover. Stereotyped by L. Johnson. viii, 3-587, [5], 190 p., 4 leaves of plates (2 frontispieces and 2 added engraved title pages); 15 cm. Contemporary full calf with five spine compartments between raised bands; gilt-tooled title in second compartment: Polyglott Bible. Inscription on blank leaf following front free endpaper: "Harrison Shirls His Bible Bot in the Winter of 1838 Washington Pa." In 1890 Harrison Shirls and his wife, Catherine, donated land for the construction of a new Methodist Church in Washington, Pa. The New Testament has separate title page with title: The Polyglott New Testament. Both added engraved title pages have undated imprint: Philadelphia: Published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. Both Cowperthwait and Desilver, Thomas, & Co. are listed at 253 Market St. Desilver, Thomas, & Co. were only in existence in 1836 and 1837; it was succeeded by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. in 1838 at the same address. Text printed in two columns. Checklist American Imprints, 43172. In Good+ Condition: leather is rubbed; front joint is partially separated; first frontispiece is chipped along fore-edge; lower corner of first engraved title page is creased with several small closed tears; one small closed tear from fore-edge of second engraved title page; a few pages with small stains; otherwise light soiling.
