Contemporary full calf with six spine compartments between gilt rules; leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title: "Dana's Sermons." Early American Imprints, Second series (Shaw & Shoemaker), no. 10249. The author, James Dana (1735-1812), was a graduate of Harvard and an Old Light Congregationalist minister. His appointment to a church in Wallingford, Conn., in 1758 inspired a pamphlet war between supporters of the Old Light and New Light factions called the Wallingford Controversy. Among the sermons in this volume is "Caution Against Bad Books." In Good+ Condition: leather is rubbed with minor loss at spine ends; both joints starting at tail, but volume is still solid; pp. 483-4 has a closed tear from upper edge along gutter for about two thirds of the way down; paper is browned with occasional foxing; clean and tight.
