Very dark green cloth with gilt-stamped spine titles. Top page edges gilt. This was the first book on the history of art in the United States. The author, William Dunlap (1766-1839), was an American portrait painter, playwright, and theater manager. He helped to found the National Academy of Design in 1825, and he also wrote several books, publishing this work in 1834. In this edition, the editors have employed "judicious pruning and corrections of conspicuous errors" in the original text and have added addenda containing "brief accounts of several hundred painters, engravers, sculptors, and architects . . . all of those working before 1835" known to them.
