Signatures: a-c4 d2 A-Z4 2A-2G4 2H2; [pi]4 A-Z4. 19th-century tree calf with five spine compartments between gilt rules; boards have bevelled edges. Leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title: Feyjoo Ilustracion. Remains of handwritten paper label at tail of spine. Marbled fixed endpapers. The second title was also published by Blas Roman in 1781. Engraved headpieces and initials. Pink oval stamp on p. 1 of Ilustracion Apologetica of the Biblioteca del Colegio Civil Queretaro. Benito Jerónimo Feijoo y Montenegro (1676-1764) was an important Spanish philosopher whose 9-volume Teatro Crítico Universal (1727-39) and 5-volume Cartas Eruditas y Curiosas (1742-60) were collections of essays on wide-ranging topics. The two works in this volume were his responses to criticisms of his previous work. The back fixed endpaper is partially detached; the front fixed endpaper is completely detached revealing that the marbling is on the back of a Spanish printed document dated 1810. Scarce. In Very Good- Condition: loss at tail of spine; minor loss along edges of spine label; several small scrapes on boards; leather has separated from front board along upper edge and fore-edge; front fixed endpaper detached but present; back fixed endpaper partially detached; pages are clean and bright.
