Former owner's name on front free endpaper: Anna Stern Clewell, 1944. Attached to the front fixed endpaper is an interesting typed list of 18 books and 18 book owners who were engaged in a book circulation agreement. A. Clewell was to pass this book on on June 19 (oops!). The author, Christine Goutiere Weston (1904-1989), was born in India to a British indigo planter of French descent. After marrying an American businessman she came to the United States and became a writer. Indigo is set in India. The New York Times review in 1943 praised: "the richness of the setting -- the fragrance and the filth of the river and its plains, the languorous days and liquid nights, the rank jungle growth, the tug of racial conflict."
