"Thorough": Archibald Forbes (Men of the Day no. 169) -- Vanity Fair, Jan. 5, 1878

Carlo Pellegrini (1839-1889) was a caricaturist for Vanity Fair from 1869 to his death in 1889, signing his works "Ape." Archibald Forbes (1838-1900), British war correspondent, began writing for the Morning Star while enlisted in the Royal Dragoons. After leaving the army he founded London Scotsman, a weekly paper that he ran from 1867 to 1871. While reporting from the siege of Metz in 1870, he helped to establish the use of the telegraph for war reporting. This began his long and very successful career as a war correpondent.
