Robert Hare (1781-1858), an American chemist, was a professor of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania and was elected an Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1824. He invented the calorimeter, the deflagrator, and the oxyhydrogen blowtorch. Late in his life he became a Spiritualist and published Experimental Investigation of the Spirit Manifestations.
