Gilt-stamped decoration on spine and both boards. Yellow endpapers. Frontispiece portrait of the author signed: John Cranch pinxt, and J.F.E. Prudhomme sc. Added engraved title page with title: Poems by Rufus Dawes. The title vignette was drawn and engraved by the same artists. The volume is dedicated to the artist John Cranch (his brother-in-law). Final 10 pages contain publisher's catalog. Embossed circular stamp on front fixed endpaper of binder: Elles & Middlebrook, New York. This volume was the first in the publisher's series Library of American Poets. Rufus Dawes (1803-1859) was an American poet; he studied law with Judge William Cranch, whose daughter Bertha he later married. In Good Condition: cloth is soiled and rubbed; cloth over front joint is splitting; endpapers are discolored; front hinge weak; foxing throughout; otherwise, clean. Good. Item #005115
