Signed by the author on p. 24. Title page printed in red and black; red initial letter on p. 9. Gift inscription on front free endpaper, dated Nov. 1910: "Fannie S.E. Spencer from her Cousins Benj. J & OH Brenton." Benjamin Jahleel Brenton (1832-1911) of Jamaica, New York, was the brother of the author, Sarah Elizabeth Brenton (1843-1907). Orvetta Hall Brenton (1844-1928) was his wife. The Brentons were a prominant Rhode Island family descended from Governor William Brenton (1610-1674), one of the original settlers of Newport, R.I., in 1637. Their branch of the family settled in Jamaica, N.Y., in the 1820s. In Very Good Condition: cloth is faded in spots; spine is faded with loss of some gilt; pages and plates are clean and bright.
