Emery had been hired to find all of the descendants of Gideon Howland in order to settle a large estate following the death of Hetty Green, who had held a life interest in the income from the estate. Hetty Green invested her income very well and had no descendants. When she died in 1916, there was $1.5 million of the Howland money and $150 million of her own money to be divided among the Howland descedants.
