Stipple engraving of Charlotte Stanley, Countess of Derby (1599-1664), granddaughter of William I, Prince of Orange. She was famous for her vigorous defence of Lathom House during the English Civil War. After her exile to the Isle of Man, she held out until the Royalists had been defeated and her husband executed, retaining, as David Hume said, "the glory of being the last person in the three kingdoms, and in all their dependent dominions, who submitted to the victorious rebels."
