The author, Étienne Pariset (1770-1847), was a French physician who founded the Société Protectrice des Animaux and was a doctor at the Salpêtrière Hospital, where he was the physician for the insane. Edme-Joachim Bourdois de La Motte (1754-1835) was a French physician who became the chief doctor of the Army of the Alps in 1794. He was named chief doctor of epidemics for the Seine Department in 1805 and was one of the early members of the Royal Academy of Medicine.
