The author, Étienne Pariset (1770-1847), was a French physician who founded the Société Protectrice des Animaux and was a doctor at the Salpêtrière Hospital, where he was the physician for the insane. Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) was a French professor of anatomy at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. He is considered a founder of comparative anatomy and an important contributor to the fields of vertebrate paleontology and geology.
