Contemporary half calf with marbled paper over boards. Six spine compartments between double gilt rules and red leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title "Museum." In binder's error? contains Aug. and July 1838 of The Museum of Foreign Literature, Science and Art, bound with Oct. 16, 1843 of Campbell's Foreign Semi-Monthly Magazine, and Godey's Lady's Book for May and April 1849. The Museum includes biography, travel, poetry, and parts of Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens; Zicci by Edward Bulwer Lytton; and The Narrative of John Ward Gibson by Charles Whitehead, as well as shorter works of fiction. Godey's contains fashion and architectural plates, and music (I Pray for Thee at Nightfall by Carl Linley and arranged for piano by W.J. Wetmore, M.D.; Leaflets of Memory, words by D.W. Belisle, music by James Piper). Bookplate on front fixed endpaper indicates that the volume was given to the Union Philosophical Society of Dickinson College by Charles Albright of Berks County, Pa. Small oval label at head of spine with handwritten number. Charles Albright (1830-1880) attended Dickinson College; passed the bar in 1852; led a group of anti-slavery settlers to Kansas in 1854; was a delegate to the 1860 Republican National Convention; was commissioned a major with the 132nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, in 1862; was promoted to Brevet Brigadier General in charge of the 202nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, in 1865, which guarded the Manassas Gap railway in Virginia; and elected to Congress in 1872.
