Notes on front endpapers: "Presented by Mrs. Dr. Wm. Speer Nov. 3, 1904" and "Rebound Nov. 1955." Occasional pencilled marginal notes; one folded leaf bound at the end with additional pencil notations. The Rev. William Speer (1822-1904) was a missionary in China; in 1853 with his wife, Elizabeth Ewing Speer (d. 1910), he helped to found the Presbyterian Church in Chinatown, San Francisco.
