Journalist William Swinton (1833-1892) wrote The War for the Union: The First, Second, Third and Fourth Years of the War, which was published in Sept. 1864 by the Loyal Publication Society, New York. The Union League of Philadelphia, founded in 1862 to support the Union cause during the Civil War, established a Publications Board in Feb. 1863. It published this pamphlet as The War for the Union from Fort Sumpter to Atlanta, later in 1864, as its pamphlet number 82. Aimed at the 1864 presidential election, the concluding paragraphs warn that one of the political parties supports the Jefferson Davis "and his crew." Sabin, Bibliotheca Americana, 94085n.
