Philadelphia: 1785. Original handwritten deed on vellum 18 x 27 inches, folded to 23 x 17 cm. Indenture made 3 Nov. 1785 between John Kling of the Northern Liberties of Philadelphia, merchant, and Margaret, his wife, and Michael Mallett of the city of Philadelphia, merchant. John and Margaret Kling for L1,516 sell to Michael Mallett (1) a brick building and lot on the west side of 2nd St. in the Northern Liberties (18 x 50 feet); (2) two wooden buildings and a lot on the west side of 2nd St. (36 x 50 feet) in the Northern Liberties; (3) 1 house and 3 lots on the north side of Mulberry St. and east side of Front St. in Philadelphia (144 x 106 feet); (4) an adjacent lot on Mulberry St. (108 x 106 feet); and (5) a lot on the east side of Front St. (224 x 198 feet) on the north side of the previous 2 lots. Acknowledged by William Rush, justice of the the court of common pleas of Philadelphia. Witnessed by James Pickering and William Rush. Signed by John Kling; Margaret Kling could only make her mark. Recorded on Philadelphia deed book M, p. 428 on June 15 1786 by Mathew Irwin, which is marked here with an embossed seal reading "Inrollment Office of Pennsylvania." Mathew Irwin (1740- 1800) came to Philadelphia from Ireland in 1767. During the American Revolution he served first in Malcolm’s Additional Continental Regiment and later as a lieutenant in the 2d cavalry, Pulaski’s Legion. He became recorder of Philadelphia in 1785.
