Each is signed by Joseph Reese, the recorder. The Artisans Order of Mutual Protection, established in 1873, is the second oldest fraternal insurance organization in the United States. In 1910, as described in the pamphlet, membership was available to white men between 18 and 50 years, "physically sound, of good moral character, and having a firm belief in the existence of a Supreme Being."
