Handwritten letter of commission to the War Office

1803. 1 leaf 15 x 20 cm., received on June 18, 1804, signed "W. Dundas." William Dundas (1762-1845) was a Scottish politician who served in Parliament for many years and as Secretary at War from 1804 to 1806. He asks that Lord Hawkesbury be told that these three men had been commissioned officers of the Wanlockhead Company of Pioneers on Nov. 8, 1803. They were: Gilbert Laing captain; John Taylor lieutenant; and John Bramwell ensign. These were 3 of the 110 men from the Wanlockhead mines in Scotland who had volunteered to provide gunpower, tools, and men for the defense of the country against attack by Napoleon.
