1849. 1 leaf of light blue paper folded to make 4 pages, dated Jan. 26, 1849, Navy Yard, Portsmouth, N.H. Captain Daniel Turner, Commandant U.S. Navy Yard, Portsmouth, writes to Nathaniel Wilson, Purser of the U.S. Navy, with a copy of a circular from J. Y. Mason, the Navy Department, directing the payment of mechanics and laborers on the 6th and 20th of each month. Captain Daniel Turner (1794?-1850) commanded the Caledonia during the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813 and was with Oliver Hazard Perry onboard the Nonsuch when he died in 1819. After a career at sea, Turner became Commandant of the Portmouth Navy Yard in 1846. Nathaniel Wilson had been commissioned a purser in 1830.
