Illustrated color pastedown on front section of portfolio repeating title page. Former owner's name written at upper edge of portfolio pastedown, dated Paris 1872. Alfred Le Petit (1841-1909) was a painter and a caricaturist for L'Eclipse, a republican newspaper of the French Third Republic, at a period when censorship had been lifted and political satire was flourishing. The 31 caricatures included here present political figures as flowers, fruits, and vegetables for critical and humorous effect. Hippolyte Briollet (1832-1877) wrote the verse of commentary that accompanies each caricature. Scarce. In Very Good- Condition: lacking original ties and connection between portfolio sections; portfolio is lightly soiled; edges of title page are soiled and chipped, with creasing at upper corner; occasional edge soiling and chipping, as well as corner creasing, thoughout; however, illustrations are clean and bright; complete.
