When the Federal Writers' Project, part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), was terminated in 1939, The Negro in Pittsburgh had not been completed. The manuscript was held by the Pennsylvania State Library and microfilmed in 1970, but not properly published until this edition. Projects of the Federal Writers' Project included the well-known state and city guides, as well as studies of American ethinic and racial minorities, some of which were published at the time or subsequently, such as The Florida Negro with contributions by Zora Neale Hurston, published in 1993.
