Typed letter signed by Congressman Joseph Wheeler (Fighting Joe Wheeler)

1893. 1 typed letter, dated Oct. 3, 1893, from Joseph Wheeler on stationery of the Committee of the Territories, House of Representatives, to J. W. Morgan, of Florence, Alabama. Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906) represented Alabama in Congress 1881-1883 and 1885-1899. He graduated from West Point in 1859 and jointed the Confederate Army in 1861, serving with the Army Corps of Cavalry of the Western Arm and becoming lieutenant general in 1865. Known as "Fighting Joe," he also served in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. J. W. Morgan was the first superintendent of the public schools in Florence, Alabama, in 1890. A recent graduate of A. & M. College in Auburn, he was teaching Latin and English literature at the state normal school in Florence when he died suddenly on Sept. 17 1894. In this letter, Wheeler is responding to a request for assistance from Morgan.
