1886. 1 handwritten letter, dated Washington, Dec. 20, 1886, to Gail T. L. Roper to say that Hampton will not be able to attend her daughter's marriage to "my young kinsman." Wade Hampton (1818-1902) served in the Confederate calvary during the Civil War, reaching the rank of lieutenant general. After serving as governor of South Carolina from 1876 to 1879, he represented that state in the U. S. Senate from 1879 to 1891. This letter was written while he was in Washington, D.C.
