Contemporary half calf with marbled paper over boards. Gilt-tooled spine title. The Oregon Territory was published in London by Charles Knight & Co. in 1846. Front fixed endpaper bears bookplate of the Rev. J. Congreve, Overslade. John Congreve opened Overslade private classical school near Rugby, England, by 1854. In the 1860s, George Farncomb Wright became his partner in the school; they dissolved their partnership for "the tuition of young gentlemen" in 1871. The Backwoods of Canada was by English author Catherine Parr Strickland Traill (1802-1899), who emigrated to Upper Canada with her husband and sister in 1832. It was one of the first in the genre of Canadian nature essays and the first of several books she wrote about her new land.
