The author, Edwin Arnold (1832-1904), was an English journalist and poet who served as principal of the Government Sanskrit College at Poona, India, from 1856 to 1861. After his return to England, he wrote this poem in which he sought to present the life and philosophy of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. This edition features Art Nouveau-style illustrations by Willy Pogany.
