Hero of Alexandria (c. 10 AD-c. 70 AD) was a mathematician and engineer in Roman Egypt. As a mathematician he is remembered for Heron's formula for calculating the area of a triangle using the lengths of its sides. Much of his writing and designs have been lost but some of was preserved in Latin or Arabic translations.
