New York: Oxford University Press, 1988. Hardcover. x, [4], 333 p., [16] p. of illustrations: tables; 24 cm. Yellow cloth spine with black spine title; black paper over boards. The author interviewed hundreds of the 1,000+ volunteers, largely white college students from the North, who had travelled to Mississippi in June 1964 to register Black voters and run "freedom schools." He argues that their experiences that summer, including beatings and arrests by White police and the murder of 4 of their cohorts, resulted in their evolution from liberals to radicals who were active in subsequent social movements including the anti-war movement and the women's movement.
