Porter (1870-1941) was was an important early cinematographer with the Edison Manufacturing Company and the Famous Players Film Company. He took charge of motion picture production at Edison's New York studio in 1899 and in the early 20th century was the most influential filmmaker in the United States. His most famous film is The Great Train Robbery produced in 1903. After directing his last film in 1915, Niagara Falls, he continued to invent and improve motion picture equipment.
