Handwritten Parchment Contract for Transfer of Property on Marriage and after Birth of Two Children
1713. One handwritten parchment indenture (80 x 84 cm.) dated 3 April 1713. In recognition of the upcoming marriage of John Ayling of Bentley, Southhampton, and Mary Wyburd [Wiburd], John Ayling, the elder, will pay 1,000 pounds to John Ayling the younger, and 200 pounds will be paid by John Wyburd to John Ayling the younger within 2 months after the birth of the first child, and another 100 pounds within 2 months after the birth of the second child, in addition to granting rights to the manor called Puray or Perryland in Bentley parish, Hampshire. Armorially embellished initial letter; 9 red seals with signatures; blue stamp in margin. Although the bride's family name is spelled "Wyburd" throughout the document, both the bride and her father sign their names "Wiburd."
