The Hornbook; Foreword by James C. McGuire to a list of the Collection of Hornbooks given by him to The New York Public Library

New York: New York Public Library, 1927. Paperback. 10 p., [3] p. of illustrations; 25 cm. Grey card cover printed in black; stapled. Reprinted Nov. 1927 from The Bulletin of the New York Public Library of Nov. 1927. Paul D. Bailey prepared the list 33 hornbooks given to the library by James C. McGuire. The illustrations contain black-and-white photographs of 9 of those hornbooks. Developed before the advent of printing, hornbooks consisted of a hard surface with a handle (often a wooden paddle) to which a lesson was attached and then protected with a thin, clear piece of horn. They were used in Europe and, later, the American colonies from the early 15th century until the late 18th century. In Very Good Condition: edges of cover are browned; small chip out of upper edge of front cover; corresponding small closed tear or chip in several leaves; otherwise, clean and solid. Very Good.
