Contemporary half calf with five spine compartments between double gilt rules; gilt-tooled title in second compartment. Paper label with handwritten number in first compartment. Marbled paper over boards. Bookplate on front fixed endpaper indicating that this was acquired by the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., in 1864. Published weekly. The final 52 pages contain a one-leaf publication issued separately, The People's Journal -- Annals of Industry. Although the title page of the volume is dated 1847, this volume contains the issues for the second half of 1846. Contents include the "What is Doing for the People" series, which reports on mutual aid societies, charitable institutions, and schools of industry in various English cities; articles by William Howitt about the formation of the Anti-Slavery League, and Increasing Obstructions to Bathing, and Misuse of the Police; articles on the Huddersfield Mechanics Institution and the Birmingham Athenic Institute, and the proposed formation of the Whittington Club in London; What the Rich are Doing to Help the Poor: A Desultory Chapter on an Infant School by Mary Leman Gillies; Thoughts upon Democracy in Europe by Giuseppe Mazzini; Country Houses for the Working Classes by Andrew Winter; The French Working Classes by Julia Kavanagh; articles on education and other topics by Harriet Martineau; poetry by Willam Howitt and others; fiction by Mary Leman Gillies, Lydia Maria Child, and others.
