Longfellow's Dream: This Artistic Pageant is Presented by the Young People of the Church of the Restoration [program]

Philadelphia: Church of the Restoration, 1889. Pamphlet. [4] p.; 22 cm. Printed in dark brown. The pageant Longfellow's Dream was a very popular entertainment from 1889 to 1892. The advertisement for this performance in the Philadelphia Inquirer for Dec. 1, 1889, declared that 125 men, women, and children would appear in an "artistic, literary, musical and spectacular pageant, representing characters and scenes from Longfellow' creations." The performance was at Horticultural Hall at Broad and Spruce in Philadelphia. This was not the now better-known building of that name that was built in Fairmont Park to house a botanical garden during the 1876 Centennial Exposition. This Horticultural Hall was designed by Frank Day Miles and built in 1894-96. Although an attractive structure, it was demolished in 1917 when the Shubert theater was erected. The reader in the pageant was H. Kate Murdoch (1842-1932), a Shakespearean scholar who taught elocution at schools in Philadelphia and New York. Extremely scarce. In Good+ Condition: front and back are lightly soiled; 3 horizontal creases; solid. Good +. Item #008440
